Rarieda: The government has embarked on constructing a police station at the Riat-Kolemo market in Rarieda sub-county to tackle the increasing insecurity issues in the area. The Sh14.8 million project, financed by the NG-CDF Board, is slated for completion by December this year.

According to Kenya News Agency, NG-CDF Board Chairman Mr. Olago Aluoch clarified that the project’s funding is sourced from the ‘Best Demonstration Project Kitty’, distinct from the NG-CDF allocation to constituencies. This specific fund is utilized by the board to implement projects nationwide that serve as exemplary models for optimal NG-CDF fund usage.

Olago highlighted that the NG-CDF is set to disburse over Sh58 billion to all constituencies nationwide this financial year, with Rarieda earmarked to receive Sh192 million. However, the funding for the police station is separate from this allocation and comes directly from the NG-CDF board through the ‘best demonstration’ kitty. The project was brought to the board’s attention following a request from the Siaya county security team, who underscored the dire need for the facility due to prevalent insecurity in the area.

The former Kisumu West legislator added that the area’s NG-CDF fund manager and board chair will collaborate with the Sub County Works Officer to oversee the project. A stipulation for the contractor is to hire all unskilled laborers from the local community as a condition for undertaking the project.

Deputy Chief of Staff Eliud Owalo, who attended the launch, praised the NG-CDF board’s efforts in establishing the police station. He noted that it would enhance security and facilitate the prosperity of businesses at the modern Riat-Kolemo market. Owalo also mentioned that the national government plans to complete the Asembo-Ndori water project, tarmac the Lwak-Ka Elijah Road, and construct a stadium at Nyilima grounds in the upcoming financial year, benefiting the region’s residents.
