Embu: Governor Cecily Mbarire has condemned the use of live ammunition by the police that led to the death of two people during demonstrations held in Ishiara Town in Mbeere North Constituency. The demonstrations were organized by residents protesting the deplorable state of Ishiara Level 4 Hospital.

According to Kenya News Agency, Mbarire expressed that the use of excessive force, including live ammunition against unarmed demonstrators, is unacceptable. In her statement, she emphasized that the situation did not warrant such a level of force, which resulted in a tragic outcome.

The governor has called for immediate, thorough, and independent investigations into the incident to ensure those responsible are held accountable. She also extended condolences to the bereaved families, describing the incident as deeply regrettable and asserting that it should have never occurred.

Mbarire urged leaders not to politicize the matter and instead to support efforts aimed at justice, accountability, and lasting solutions. Addressing public concerns over the status and service delivery at the hospital, the governor noted that the health department had already taken steps to implement immediate corrective measures.

Actions to be undertaken include the immediate cleaning of the facility and infrastructure interventions aligned with the 2025/2026 Financial Year. The Department has also recommended the immediate transfer of the facility’s medical superintendent, administrator, and laboratory-in-charge to improve efficiency and service delivery.

Other leaders from Embu, including Senator Alexander Mundigi and MPs Gitonga Mukunji (Manyatta), Leonard Muthende (Mbeere North), Muchangi Karemba (Runyenjes), and Njoki Njeru (Women Rep), have also condemned the incident.
