Governor Bii Urges Recognition of Barsirian Arap Manyei as National Hero

Uasin Gishu:During the 63rd Mashujaa Day celebrations at Kipchoge Keino Stadium, Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Chelilim Bii called on the Kenyan National government to honor Barsirian Arap Manyei as a national hero.

According to Kenya News Agency, Governor Bii highlighted that Arap Manyei was Kenya’s longest-serving political detainee, enduring over 40 years of detention under colonial rule for his resistance against British oppression. The governor emphasized that Manyei’s efforts in opposing colonial injustice warrant full national recognition and inclusion in Kenya’s list of heroes.

Governor Bii also proposed the establishment of a cultural center, monument, and Technical Training institution at Limuru Ng’eny, Soy Sub-county, in Manyei’s honor. Furthermore, he urged the government to address land issues by resettling squatters in Maili Tisa, Turbo Constituency, and Sambul in Keses constituency, advocating for the provision of title deeds to these families.

On the topic of education, Governor Bii expressed concern over the financial crisis at Moi University, urging the National government to intervene. He noted that as the second oldest public university in Kenya, Moi University plays a pivotal role in higher education and should not be allowed to collapse. This appeal comes amid a strike by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), Moi University chapter, over salary arrears and financial difficulties.

Governor Bii implored President Ruto and the Ministry of Education to devise a lasting solution to restore normalcy at the university, highlighting the plight of over two hundred workers who have lost their jobs and are now dealing with stress and depression.
