Lodwar: Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai and County Commissioner Julius Kavita on Monday intervened to ensure the successful release of 13 Ethiopian nationals arrested along the Kibish-Karebur-Lokitaung Road in Turkana North. Addressing the press in Lodwar, the two senior officials clarified that the individuals, including minors, were in Turkana for school admissions and were not undocumented aliens as earlier reported by authorities.
According to Kenya News Agency, Governor Lomorukai mentioned that the issue had caused tension and threatened to cause a diplomatic tiff. Turkana herders often migrate to Ethiopia to graze their livestock during the drought season, which adds a layer of complexity to cross-border relations.
Governor Lomorukai highlighted their outreach to the Cabinet Secretary for Interior, who played a crucial role in ensuring the release of those arrested. He emphasized the commitment of both countries to peaceful coexistence.
County Commissioner Kavita explained that the arrest resulted from misinformation. He noted that parents were attracted to the high quality of education in Kenya. Kavita assured that they would work with the county director of education to gather details on foreign students in the county, underscoring their commitment to promoting the movement of people from neighboring countries.
