Keiyo north: The national government, through the National Irrigation Board (NIB), has embarked on a project to desilt and rehabilitate the Sing’ore Dam in Keiyo North at a cost of Sh80 million. The initiative aims to provide water to approximately 4,000 households for both domestic use and irrigation purposes.
According to Kenya News Agency, Keiyo North MP Adams Kipsanai emphasized the importance of the dam’s rehabilitation during the official handover to the contractor. He encouraged residents to utilize the water for agricultural activities, thereby contributing to food security and improving their economic status.
Contractor Alex Miriti assured that the rehabilitation work, which is expected to take 18 months, will be expedited to finish earlier. The project includes constructing elevated tanks to facilitate water flow to farms using gravity, along with a 12-kilometer pipeline to deliver water to the intended beneficiaries.
MP Kipsanai highlighted that this is the fourth dam undergoing rehabilitation in the constituency, following similar efforts at Etoo, Yokot, and Emsoo. These projects are anticipated to boost growth in agriculture and the dairy sector.
Local resident Rosebella Kimaiyo expressed her enthusiasm for the project, noting the significant time savings for women who previously had to search for water. The availability of water is expected to enable horticultural farming, providing a financial boost for families, particularly in managing educational expenses.
Kimaiyo stated, “With the sale of horticultural products like vegetables and tomatoes, we will be able to pay school fees comfortably without resorting to harambees or bursaries.”
