Government Rehabilitating Water Towers, Says CS Environment

Nyandarua: The government will continue rehabilitating the five critical water towers in the country, as well as other degraded areas to enhance resilience against climatic changes. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, has so far resulted in the establishment of millions of trees in Mt. Kenya, Cherangani Hills, Mt. Elgon, Aberdare ranges, and the Mau forest.

According to Kenya News Agency, Environment CS Dr. Deborah Barasa highlighted the positive impacts of the rehabilitation efforts during the World Environment Day celebrations at Olkalou Arboretum ground. The efforts have improved water security and biodiversity. Dr. Barasa also mentioned the operationalization of the Kenya National Carbon Registry through the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), creating a transparent framework for the carbon market industry.

The government is committed to expanding green energy solutions and supporting renewable energy investments. These efforts aim to reduce emissions while strengthening the economy. The ministry is also assisting farmers through climate-smart agriculture, enhancing weather forecasting, and providing climate advisory services. These measures are intended to enhance food security and build resilience against climate change.

Dr. Barasa applauded the enactment of the Meteorological Act 2026 as a significant achievement, strengthening information and early warning systems. This milestone enhances the capacity of the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority to deliver timely and accurate weather and climate information, aiding farmers, pastoralists, and communities in making informed decisions to protect their livelihoods and lives.

She encouraged schools, households, and institutions to take advantage of the upcoming October to December short rains season by planting and nurturing trees. Nyandarua County Executive Member for Environment, Samuel Wachira Mugo, speaking on behalf of Governor Moses Kiarie Badilisha, announced the establishment of the Nyandarua County Climate Change Action Plan. This plan aims to ensure that Nyandarua County develops a low carbon, climate-resilient economy that sustains livelihoods. Mugo added that the Action Plan would guide necessary actions to address climate change impacts and capitalize on emerging opportunities.
