Nairobi: George Obell has been appointed as the Commissioner for the Micro and Small Taxpayers Department (MST) at the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), effective from November 10, 2025. The appointment was announced by KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga as part of the authority’s ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional capacity and enhance service delivery.
According to Kenya News Agency, Mr. Obell has been serving in an acting capacity since the department’s establishment on March 1, 2025. With over 28 years of experience in tax administration, he brings extensive strategic and technical expertise to the role. Prior to this appointment, he served as Deputy Commissioner for the Medium Taxpayers Office and the East and South of Nairobi Tax Service Office.
In his previous roles, Mr. Obell led key reforms focused on tax digitalisation. These reforms included the successful implementation of electronic invoicing systems, the adoption of data analytics, and the use of risk-based compliance interventions to enhance operational efficiency. He also chairs the African Tax Administration Forum VAT Technical Committee, showcasing his expertise in areas like digital taxation and tax policy.
Mr. Obell’s contributions have been recognized through an award of the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear by the President of Kenya for his outstanding service and leadership in tax reform. He holds a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Nairobi, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the United States International University-Africa. Additionally, he is a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya.
The KRA Board and Management have expressed confidence that Mr. Obell’s appointment will further strengthen efforts in supporting the micro and small taxpayers’ segment, enhancing compliance, and fostering inclusive growth.
