Maragua: Maragua residents have expressed optimism as construction of the Sh850 million Gakoigo Stadium progresses steadily, saying the project will transform the town and stimulate economic activity in the agriculturally rich area. Residents said the 10,000-capacity facility would change the face of Maragua while creating opportunities for businesses, including hotels, shops, food vendors, and transport operators.
According to Kenya News Agency, James Mwangi, a boda boda rider at Ha Borithi stage, said the construction had already increased activity in the area, with workers and visitors supporting local businesses. Mwangi noted that the influx of thousands of people for matches and events would benefit local hotels, shops, food vendors, and transport operators, further boosting economic activity. He also highlighted the potential for the stadium to engage young people positively, providing them with a space to nurture their sporting talents.
Businessman Kennedy Kimani, who owns a small eatery, reported that his business had already benefited from the construction activity as workers purchased meals from his establishment. Kimani expressed confidence that the completion of the stadium would open more opportunities in hospitality, vending, and events management, thereby injecting more money into the local economy through increased demand for various services.
Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi provided insights into the stadium’s features, including a standard football pitch, an eight-lane athletics track, modern changing rooms, a VVIP pavilion, and ample parking. He emphasized that the Gakoigo Stadium project is part of the national government’s initiative to expand access to modern sporting facilities across the 47 counties. Mwangi also mentioned the construction of another 10,000-capacity stadium in Murang’a Town, both slated for completion by 2027.
Upon completion, the two stadiums are expected to significantly boost sports development in Murang’a County by providing athletes with modern training and competition facilities while attracting regional and national tournaments. The projects are also anticipated to stimulate economic activity through increased demand for accommodation, food, transport, retail, and event-related services in Maragua, Murang’a Town, and neighboring areas.
