Fishing industry in the country is set to thrive following the recently signed economic partnership agreement deal between Kenya and the European Union.
This was revealed by Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi, who said the deal will see fishermen from the Lake Region rip big, with increased export of fish to the EU markets.
Mudavadi who made the remarks in Bondo, Siaya County, said the mega deal has open up to duty free and quota free access of Kenyan exports to twenty-seven European countries.
He lauded Trade Principal Secretary (PS), Alfred Ombudo K’ombudo who led the negotiations on behalf of the Kenya government, under the guidance of President William Ruto.
‘This agreement is significant and will have huge impact on the Kenya economy. It has opened doors for fish and horticulture to be exported to 27 EU countries and will definitely spur economic growth in the region,’ said Mudavadi.
The Prime Cabinet Secretary also revealed that Kenya is currently in similar talks with the United States and
the United Arabs Emirates, to further open-up markets for Kenya export products.
Musalia said that although the Kenya Kwanza regime inherited a government with empty coffers, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and Kenyans should remain hopeful of better economic times.
‘As a former Minister for Finance, I had predicted hard economic time and problems with the economy when Kenya Kwanza took office, but with these strategies in place there is hope at the end of the tunnel for Kenyans,’ he said.
Mudavadi who was flanked by the Information, Communications and The Digital Cabinet Security (CS) Eliud Owalo, during the official opening of Bondo ACK Trinity Plaza, constructed at a cost of Sh 214 million, said the government has pleasant news Kenyans with regards to the economy, which will be announced soon.
‘I want you to look at me, look at me again, we (the government), have some pleasant news for Kenyans, which will be announced very soon. I will not go further than that but expect pleasant news from us,
soon and better economic times,’ he remarked.
Mudavadi observed that peace is paramount in the region both in Kenya and its neighbours for the economy to grow, adding that it’s only in unity, that challenges can be overcome in the country.
Mr Owalo on his part underscored the government’s commitment to uplift the plight of the youth and spur economy, through the digital economy.
On his part, Owalo said that every ward in the country shall benefit from free Wi-Fi and interment connection to enable the citizens exploit opportunities in the digital space.
