Nairobi:Eritrea’s national football team has arrived in Kenya to prepare for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Harambee Stars, which is scheduled for Saturday. The Eritrean team, also known as the Red Sea Camels, settled into camp and began their training sessions at the Police Sacco Grounds in Nairobi.
According to Kenya News Agency, this match is set to take place at the Nyayo National Stadium on September 26. While Kenya has already secured a spot in the AFCON 2027 finals as co-hosts with Uganda and Tanzania, the qualifiers serve as a valuable opportunity for head coach Benni McCarthy to develop his squad in competitive matches.
The upcoming encounter holds historical significance, as past meetings between Kenya and Eritrea have been challenging for the Harambee Stars. Notably, Eritrea defeated Kenya in previous AFCON 2008 qualifiers and again in the 2019 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup semi-final.
Kenya’s head coach, Benni McCarthy, has announced a 24-man squad for the opening qualifier, led by captain Michael Olunga. The team includes a mix of locally and internationally based players, aiming to start their AFCON 2027 preparations on a strong note. Following the match against Eritrea, Kenya will face Guinea-Africa on October 1.
