English Premier League Trophy Makes Historic Visit to Kisumu

Kisumu:The iconic English Premier League (EPL) trophy made a historic visit to the lakeside city of Kisumu, marking its first appearance in the region. The prestigious football silverware was officially received at City Hall during a press event attended by senior county officials, business executives, and football enthusiasts, highlighting a significant moment for sports tourism in western Kenya.

According to Kenya News Agency, Roland Ofori, East African Breweries PLC (EABL) Group Head of Brand for Guinness, confirmed that the trophy on display is the authentic piece, underscoring Kenya’s deep passion for football as a reason for the EPL’s visit. Ofori highlighted the unique unifying nature of football in Kenya, which continues to be a prime destination for the global tour.

Efforts were made to extend the trophy tour beyond Nairobi, culminating in its arrival in Kisumu County. Ofori expressed gratitude to the local government for providing a conducive environment for businesses like EABL, which produces the popular Senator Keg locally. The visit also served as a gesture of appreciation to local consumers who have supported the Guinness brand for over six decades.

Kisumu County Deputy Governor Dr. Matthew Owili thanked the EPL leadership and EABL for selecting Kisumu as a host city. He dedicated the trophy’s visit to the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, an avid Arsenal F.C. fan, acknowledging his enduring support for the team through triumphs and challenges. Dr. Owili expressed hope that the trophy’s presence would inspire young footballers across Kisumu’s informal settlements.

The EPL, established in 1992, is the most-watched sports league globally, featuring 20 elite clubs. The trophy stands at 76 centimeters tall, crafted from solid sterling silver with a golden crown. The brief event concluded with a proposal for a moment of silence to honor the late statesman’s legacy before the trophy was displayed at various public venues around the city.
