According to Kenya News Agency, Kevin Omondi, an electrical engineer, has successfully ventured into goat farming on his modest land in Nyamasaria, Kisumu. Despite his urban lifestyle and professional commitments, Omondi manages to rear about 150 goats, transforming his small-scale farm into a lucrative business. His journey began in 2019 with just four goats, and today, he reaps substantial benefits from his expanding herd.
Omondi’s primary challenge is securing adequate feed and water due to Kisumu’s unpredictable climate. However, goats’ adaptability to various environments makes them a viable option for farming in such conditions. By crossbreeding the Saneen and Galla breeds, Omondi has enhanced his goats’ productivity and resilience, resulting in over 200 liters of milk daily. This output translates to more than Sh20,000 in daily earnings, showcasing the financial potential of well-managed goat farming.
Goat milk, known for its nutritional benefits and digestibility, is gaining popularity among consumers. Farmers like Omondi are capitalizing on this demand, supplying milk to local businesses and individuals. Additionally, the short gestation period and high reproductive rates of goats offer quick returns on investment, making them an attractive option for farmers seeking sustainable income.
The shift towards goat farming is also empowering women in local communities. Grace Auma, a neighboring farmer, has turned her dairy goat venture into a flourishing business, providing fresh milk to local hotels and producing yogurt from surplus milk. Her success story is a testament to the transformative impact of goat farming on small-scale farmers’ lives.
