Elimu Scholarship Empowers 57 Learners in Nyandarua and Laikipia

Nyahururu: The Ministry of Education has extended its support to 57 learners from Laikipia and Nyandarua counties through the Elimu Scholarship Programme. This initiative aims to provide full financial backing for the students’ senior secondary education.

According to Kenya News Agency, the selected students hail from Rumuruti, Laikipia West, and Nyahururu sub-counties in Laikipia County, as well as Nyandarua North and Nyandarua West sub-counties in Nyandarua County. The scholarship targets learners from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, ensuring that these students can continue their education without the burden of financial constraints.

During the scholarship programme’s launch, Nyahururu Sub-County Director of Education, James Murage, commended the government for its effort. He emphasized that this initiative would significantly improve access to senior school education for underprivileged learners in the region. Murage highlighted that many families in the area face economic challenges that hinder educational progression, particularly at the senior secondary level.

Murage further explained that the Elimu Scholarship would support the chosen learners throughout their three years in senior school. He stressed that the scholarship would cover full school fees, a mattress, and other essential items needed for the students’ upkeep while in school. However, he cautioned that the continuity of the scholarship relies on the discipline and conduct of the beneficiaries, warning that it could be revoked in cases of serious misconduct.

The selection process involved parents submitting applications, followed by a vetting committee conducting interviews with the learners and their parents. Home visits were then made to verify the applicants’ living conditions before finalizing the selection. Murage assured that the process was transparent and aimed at identifying the most deserving candidates.

Parents of the scholarship recipients expressed their gratitude to the government. Jane Waithira, a parent of one of the beneficiaries, shared that the scholarship alleviated a significant financial burden and hoped for the programme’s expansion to reach more needy learners. Leah Wambui, whose son with a disability will attend a senior special boarding school, expressed relief and gratitude as the scholarship restored hope for her son’s continued education.
