Elderly in Kiambu County Advocate for Free Medical Care Policy

Kiambu:Elderly residents in Kiambu County are advocating for a policy that would guarantee them free medical care, as many struggle to afford essential treatments due to rising medical costs.

According to Kenya News Agency, the appeal was made during a free medical camp organized by Zetech University at its Mang’u Campus to commemorate the International Day of Older Persons. Over 300 elderly individuals received complimentary consultations, treatments, and medications at the event.

Beneficiaries expressed that while the medical camp provided temporary relief, the ongoing challenge of affording regular medical care persists. Representatives Habib Saibulu and Ann Nduku highlighted that many elderly people live on limited incomes, often having to choose between purchasing food and seeking medical attention.

Saibulu emphasized the need for a dedicated healthcare policy to help older individuals manage chronic and age-related illnesses without relying solely on family support. He pointed out that some seniors are not enrolled in the Social Health Authority scheme, and those who are struggle to maintain consistent payments.

The elderly also urged their children who have moved to urban areas to keep in contact and support their aging parents, noting that some seniors are left without sufficient financial or emotional backing after their children relocate.

Zetech University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Njenga Munene, stated that the institution is committed to aiding vulnerable community members through outreach programs. He affirmed that organizing such medical camps is part of the university’s effort to address community needs and raise awareness of the challenges older people face.

The camp treated ailments such as high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, and other age-related conditions, with referrals made for those needing specialized care. Prof. Munene underscored the university’s responsibility to utilize its resources and expertise for community support beyond the classroom.
