Wote:Makueni The Secretary of Administration in the State Department for ICT and Digital Economy, Jonam Kinama, has introduced the National Class Experience programme in Makueni County. This initiative aims to enhance digital learning in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) by providing technological tools and training.
According to Kenya News Agency, the programme was launched at ACK St. Luke Wote Township Comprehensive School, where Kinama emphasized its potential to improve access to digital educational content and foster interactive learning for students in Grades Seven and Nine. The initiative includes equipping each public junior secondary school with a smartboard, laptop, and mounted television, facilitating technology-enabled teaching.
Kinama highlighted that the digital devices would enable teachers to present content, share concepts virtually, and conduct interactive lessons. The setup allows for shared lessons across different schools, enabling one teacher to reach multiple locations simultaneously. Additionally, more than 64,000 teachers have been trained through a national model to ensure effective program implementation.
The programme is funded by the World Bank through the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project, in collaboration with the Ministries of Education and Information, Communications and the Digital Economy. In Makueni County alone, 415 schools across ten subcounties are set to benefit.
Richard Makenga, an ICT Authority Board member, noted the government’s commitment to investing in digital infrastructure. This includes a planned rollout of 100,000 fibre connections to enhance internet connectivity in remote areas, benefiting schools and health facilities. The government also offers annual internships to help young people acquire practical skills.
Makenga stressed the importance of reliable connectivity for ensuring that institutions and communities can fully engage with digital transformation. The National Class Experience programme is part of a broader effort to integrate technology into teaching and learning across public schools nationwide.
Present at the launch were Makueni Deputy County Commissioner Said Mwamzungu, County Director of Education Lucy Resiato, Teachers Service Commission County Director John Paul Wephoghe, representatives of KNUT and KUPPET, and the school’s principal, Onesmus Wambua.
