Bomet:Principal Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs, Aurelia Chepkirui Rono, has handed over new digital learning equipment to Bomet Primary School, aligning with the Competency-Based Education (CBE) requirement.
According to Kenya News Agency, this exercise, undertaken in collaboration with the ICT Authority, is part of the government’s Digital Literacy Programme. The initiative aims to integrate technology into teaching, enhancing classroom learning and preparing students for a digital future.
During the handover event, Rono highlighted that this effort is in line with President William Ruto’s commitment to bringing digital learning to public schools nationwide. She emphasized that the technology would improve teaching efficiency and provide learners with essential digital skills. The equipment, including interactive smartboards and teacher laptops, is designed to support CBE delivery, particularly in junior schools. The government plans to distribute these resources to all public schools.
These laptops will power the smartboards, allowing teachers to present interactive learning materials to entire classrooms without needing an internet connection. Rono stressed that the technology is meant to complement teachers, not replace them.
Rono explained that the initiative is part of the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project (KDEAP), with support from the World Bank, and is being implemented through the ICT Authority in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. The rollout began in Bomet County, with suppliers visiting schools as implementation continues.
Teachers are encouraged to ensure the equipment is registered, secured, and overseen by ICT-trained staff. The devices come with a one-year warranty and are registered on the DigiSchool platform. Schools can contact the County ICT Officer for technical assistance.
She also urged teachers and public servants to adopt emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to keep pace with technological advancements and remain relevant in the workforce.
The ICT Authority Director stated that the programme aims to provide learners across the country with comparable education standards. The distribution targets 257 institutions, with 193 reached so far.
Bomet County Director of Education, Leonard Ngugi, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, noting its potential to transform curriculum delivery and enhance CBE implementation. He praised digital literacy as a critical component of modern education and encouraged ongoing teacher training to ensure effective equipment use.
Ngugi appreciated the motivation the new gadgets have brought to the school community and thanked the PS for her commitment to improving education in Bomet County. He is optimistic that the initiative will boost school performance.
This digital learning initiative is part of a broader government agenda to modernize education, bridge the digital divide, and equip young people with skills for the digital economy. Through digital devices, teacher training, and learning resources, the programme seeks to make classroom instruction more engaging and accessible, supporting the effective delivery of the competency-based curriculum.
The PS called on school administrators, teachers, and the community to safeguard the equipment, emphasizing shared responsibility for its security and proper use. She underscored that investing in quality education and digital literacy is vital for preparing learners for future opportunities and advancing Kenya’s technological competitiveness.
