Residents and business people in Maua town can now afford smiles following ongoing construction of trenches to drain water which often flooded in the open-air market thereby damaging their goods.
Speaking to KNA, Igembe South sub-county administrator Isaiah Baitoti maintained that Meru County government is committed to improving drainage and uplifting the status of the chicken traders and mitumba vendors.
He added that the project is entirely funded by the county government under the Department of Lands and Planning who are in charge of budgeting for the whole project.
He explained that the trenches would reduce losses incurred by the traders during heavy rains which floods their stalls, damaging their goods.
He further noted that the town, being a municipality, would be receiving some financial benefits which would help improve the infrastructure.
”Maua will be receiving Sh. 10 million funding from The World Bank every financial year to help solve challenges in the municipality,” Baitoti maintained.
He noted that the county was also undertaking construction of an ablution block around people’s park in Maua where residents relax as they wait for services from both county and national government offices.
Baitoti maintained that some other projects were underway to help beautify the municipality including construction of cabros and upgrading feeder roads that have potholes like the Modern 1 road.
The county government is also planning to upgrade and improve the market status, he said.
Baitoti stated that they were planning to buy more tanks that would increase water supply in the area to address the challenge of water shortage.
One of the chicken traders in the market, Moses Mutuma, thanked the county government for addressing their concern saying that they would not be forced to close their businesses again due to floods and their business would be easily accessible to the customers.
