Kisumu: The County Government of Nakuru is betting on sports and talent development as key drivers of tourism, youth empowerment, and economic opportunities.
According to Kenya News Agency, the devolved unit’s administration has pledged continued investment in modern sporting facilities to enhance sports tourism, talent development, and create employment and business opportunities linked to sporting events. Chief Officer for Economic Planning Dr. Victor Achoka emphasized that proper facilities will promote sports tourism, one of the fastest-growing segments of the global tourism industry. He noted that international travelers increasingly seek destinations where they can combine their love of sport with immersive travel experiences.
Nakuru County has bolstered its position as a leading sports tourism destination after successfully hosting the 17th edition of the Prinsloo Sevens, a premier rugby tournament that attracted thousands of fans, over 40 men’s and women’s teams, corporate sponsors, and visitors from across East Africa. Dr. Achoka highlighted that the event not only drew spectators for competitive rugby but also showcased the county’s unique tourism offerings, from national parks and conservancies to vibrant culture and cuisine.
The annual tournament, held at the Nakuru Athletics Club, is one of Kenya’s flagship rugby competitions and serves as the opening leg of the 2026 Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) SportPesa National Sevens Circuit. Hosting such events aligns with the county’s strategy of using sports to stimulate tourism, attract investment, and create income opportunities for local businesses. Dr. Achoka noted that sports tourism is embedded within the National Tourism Strategy 2025-2030 as a high-impact growth segment designed to diversify markets, attract higher spending visitors, and encourage longer stays.
The tournament’s outcome saw KCB Rugby Club clinch the Main Cup title after defeating Kabras Sugar 19-12 in an entertaining final, while Mwamba Ladies emerged victorious in the women’s competition by overcoming Kiambaa. These events are economic drivers, attracting visitors who spend on accommodation, food, entertainment, and transport, thus creating additional income for local enterprises and enhancing Nakuru’s profile as a destination for national and regional events.
According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) Economic Survey 2025, the accommodation and food services sector is recovering alongside increased domestic and international tourism, with sporting and conference events significantly contributing to visitor arrivals and local business revenues. The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) identifies sports tourism as one of the fastest-growing niche tourism markets, with international and national sporting competitions helping to diversify tourism products and increase visitor spending beyond traditional wildlife attractions.
Globally, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) estimates that sports tourism accounts for about 10 percent of global tourism expenditure, making it a rapidly expanding segment of the tourism industry. The organization notes that major sporting events stimulate local economies by creating jobs, supporting small businesses, and improving the visibility of host destinations. Across Africa, governments are investing in sports tourism as a catalyst for economic growth, with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 recognizing sport as a contributor to youth development, social inclusion, and sustainable economic transformation.
Prinsloo Sevens, established by the Nakuru Rugby Football Club, has grown into one of Kenya’s most prestigious rugby tournaments and remains integral to the Kenya Rugby Union calendar. After the Nakuru leg, the SportPesa National Sevens Circuit continues to Kisumu for the Dala Sevens before moving to other host counties. Residents are confident that ongoing investment in sporting events will strengthen Nakuru’s hospitality industry, attract more investors, and position the county as a preferred destination for regional sporting, commercial, and corporate events.
