Mombasa: Hotels along Kenya’s Coast are increasingly investing in wellness tourism, catering to travelers seeking relaxation, fitness, and mental well-being. The latest addition is the Uzuri Village Spa at the Pride Inn Flamingo Beach Resort in Mombasa, designed around a Kenyan village concept and featuring treatment rooms and an ocean-facing jacuzzi.
According to Kenya News Agency, Hasnain Nooran, Group Managing Director of Pride Inn Hotels and Resorts, highlighted the growing trend towards wellness-focused travel. Nooran stated that the company has observed a shift in market dynamics, with travelers becoming more wellness-conscious. He emphasized that the body and mind are sources of creativity and innovation, which has led to the construction and investment in the Uzuri Villa Spa.
Industry players are optimistic about the potential growth of tourism at the Coast, fueled by improved flight connectivity and cruise ship arrivals. Nooran mentioned that the arrival of three cruise ships by February indicates positive growth in the tourism sector.
Varun Aurora, Chief Operating Officer of Pride Inn Hotel, noted the growing demand for holistic health experiences. He stated that guests are increasingly opting for restorative stays over party-style holidays. The resort has introduced structured fitness activities, such as aqua aerobics, beach jogging, and gym sessions, to promote cardiovascular health and manage lifestyle-related conditions.
Shadrach Omondi, a fitness trainer, explained that the resort offers guests a range of health and wellness training, including Zumba, aqua Zumba, beach walks, and outdoor activities. This focus on fitness is aimed at enhancing guests’ overall well-being during their stay.
Tourists have also expressed that wellness facilities play a significant role in their choice of destination. Penina Mwende, a tourist, stated that she prioritizes destinations that offer fitness and nature-related activities for rejuvenation and stress relief. Similarly, Peter Louis, a French tourist, emphasized the importance of wellness facilities for his recovery as a sports enthusiast.
