Nairobi: The National Government has allocated Sh79.1 million to KTDA’s Chebut Tea Factory to acquire modern machinery aimed at replacing its outdated equipment, enhancing productivity, and reducing production costs.
According to Kenya News Agency, Chebut Tea Factory, established in 1972, has been utilizing the same machinery since its inception, leading to decreased production levels and compromised quality due to wear and tear. Agriculture and Livestock Development CS Mutahi Kagwe, while presenting the Sh79.1 million cheque to the factory’s management, expressed concern over the low earnings caused by the outdated machines.
CS Kagwe emphasized the government’s commitment to advancing the agricultural sector through modernization efforts. He highlighted that the new machines are designed to consume less power, ultimately reducing production costs and increasing farmers’ income. Kagwe called on farmers to contribute by applying fertilizers and adopting other productivity-enhancing measures.
The CS stressed the importance of collaboration between farmers, the County government, and the national government to boost profits. He urged farmers to maintain quality by adhering to the practice of picking two leaves and a bud. Kagwe also highlighted the significance of the tea sector, noting that approximately 6.5 million people rely on it for income. This investment in machinery is part of the government’s efforts to improve farmers’ earnings and livelihoods.
Moreover, the CS issued a stern warning against the sale of counterfeit seeds, labeling it as economic sabotage. He advised farmers to purchase quality certified seedlings to ensure high productivity.
Nandi County Deputy Governor Yulitta Mitei praised the government for its support of the tea sector, stating that this is the first time Chebut factory has received such significant funding since its establishment. She mentioned that the County government is actively addressing issues of tea hawking and agricultural product theft, which negatively affect farmers’ earnings. DG Mitei applauded Chebut Tea Factory for its progress and revealed ongoing efforts to combat theft by curbing hawking activities in the region.
