Cancer Disease Soars In Vihiga

At least 200 cases have tested positive for cancer after undergoing screening at the Vihiga county referral hospital since the oncology unit was established one year ago.
Dr Joan Kitagwa, who is in charge of the unit, said the identified patients have been visiting the facilities for routine check-ups and treatment.
She appealed to residents to go for early cancer screening saying the disease is curable when detected in the initial stages.
The oncologist stated that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and lean proteins lowers the risk of contracting Cancer.
“Conversely, processed meats, refined carbohydrates, salt and alcohol may increase the risk of developing cancer,” she says.
The medic says breast, cervical, oesophagus, colon and prostate are the predominant cancers affecting urban and rural populations.
Dr Kitagwa pointed out that the cervical is for the female, while the prostate is for male but the rest affects both sexes.
She advised people that in the event they notice a lump or growth in any part of the body, they should immediately visit a physician for further investigation.
