Busia Compassionate Children’s home in Mayenje ward produced some of this year’s best performers from Matayos Sub-county in KCPE.
Leonard Owanga put a brave face to emerge top student at Mayenje Primary school with 401 marks in the just released KCPE results for the year 2022.
The 14 year Owanga who is orphaned, trounced his colleagues from well off families in what has emerged as a great lesson and motivation to children from humble backgrounds.
Speaking during a celebration held at the organization to celebrate their champions for sterling performance, Stella Egesa Achieng, the director of the institution thanked the teachers for their commitment in ensuring that students get adequate preparation before settling for their exams.
“We are very proud that our children are excelling. We thank the Government and all the sponsors and well-wishers for the support they have continued to give us,” said Achieng.
“All the pupils who sat for the exam have passed, thanks to consistent efforts by their teachers,” said Achieng, clarifying that the four from her facility who did KCPE scored above 250 marks, with Owanga emerging the overall winner.
Beside Owanga scoring 401 marks, Brian Ouma garnered 380 marks, Moses Bahati 258 and Fredrick Malatsa managing 250 marks.
Aspiring neuro-surgeon Owanga wants to join Starehe Boy Centre to materialize his dream. He encouraged fellow pupils to trust in God, work hard and never give up till they register good results.
“I was aiming higher but did not expect to score 401marks. It feels so good to reward all the people who have been with me throughout. They took care of me since I was a baby and always made sure that I excelled in life,” said Owanga.
Achieng appealed for help from well-wishers owing to the fact that a total of 10 pupils from the children’s home are expected to join secondary school in January 2023.
“Besides the four KCPE candidates who have qualified to join high school, I have six grade six pupils who are looking forward to proceeding to junior secondary next year,” said the director, reaching out for financial support to raise school fees and other requirements for a smooth transition.
The centre currently hosts over 60 children, a number which according to Achieng is overwhelming hence overstretching the facilities.
“The promising fact is that these children often excel, we have a number of professionals whose journey began at this children’s home. We have doctors, nurses, accountants and a number in teachers’ college,” she added.
Mayenje Primary school senior teacher Gabriel Bwire lauded the relentless efforts by Owanga in ensuring that he emerged at the top.
“The boy’s performance is attributed to the proper modeling he has enjoyed since childhood. This has made him more accountable and responsible,” said Bwire.
He appreciated Busia Children home for their sacrifice and commitment in bringing up children with Christian values and principles for holistic growth and development.
“I thank the management of the children’s home for all rounded care of the children, coupled with instilling discipline that is necessary for their wellbeing, ” added Bwire.
