Brian Mutevu Elected JKUSA Chairperson

Brian Mutevu, a third-year student pursuing Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, has been elected the new Chairperson of the Jomo Kenyatta University Students Association (JKUSA) after a tightly contested election. He will be deputized by Ms. Yvonne Nyambura.
The results were announced on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, following the JKUSA Council elections at JKUAT main campus.
Mutevu emerged victorious with 80 votes from the delegates, edging out his closest opponent, Brian Owade, who secured 68 votes. Other candidates James Kimani and Joshua Lepinan garnered 9 and 7 votes, respectively.
At the same time, James Nyakoi was elected as the JKUSA Secretary General, Maxwel Kipsang as the Finance Secretary, and Gerry Nyaori as the Academic Affairs Secretary.
Alfred Otieno will be the new Sports and Entertainment Secretary, while Mitchelle Achieng will assume the role of Health, Catering and Accommodation Secretary.
Tuesday’s council election brings to a close an extensive exercise, which commenced with the congress and delegates elections, held on February 7, 2023. The new JKUSA leadership is expected to be inaugurated on March 6, 2023, after which they will assume office and serve for the next one year.
Speaking while announcing the results, the Chief Returning Officer and Dean of Students, Prof. Fridah Wanzala, commended the students for conducting themselves peaceably during the entire election duration, and paid tribute to the JKUSA Electoral Commission for a professionally run elections.
“To the students, I thank you for your display of maturity and for conducting yourselves responsibly. To all the contestants, thank you for your courage, and for expressing your readiness to lead. To the winners, congratulations. I urge you to serve the student community diligently and with utmost dedication,” said Prof. Wanzala.
As the head of the student association, Brian Mutevu will be responsible for leading and representing the student community, championing their needs and interests, and working closely with the university administration to ensure that their voices are heard and their welfare is protected.
