Boda Boda Operators Urged to Prioritize Financial Responsibility

Eldoret: The President of the Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya, Kevin Mubadi, has called on riders nationwide to adopt financial discipline, ensure safety, and engage peacefully with state actors.

According to Kenya News Agency, Mubadi made his remarks during a stakeholders’ engagement forum held in Eldoret. The forum gathered boda boda operators, financiers, motorcycle dealers, and other industry stakeholders to educate riders on loan management, road safety, and security. The Association has partnered with Mogo and motorcycle dealers to empower riders through financial literacy programs aimed at better understanding loan agreements and repayment obligations.

Mubadi emphasized the importance of riders repaying their loans on time to avoid challenges. He also highlighted the necessity of maintaining peace and supporting government initiatives amidst rising living costs and fuel prices. Mubadi commended the collaboration between boda boda operators and security agencies in addressing motorcycle theft, noting that their cooperation with the police had improved security within the sector.

Rebecca Ngige, the Public Relations Manager at Mogo, stated that the forum aimed to address key challenges faced by boda boda operators, including financial literacy and motorcycle theft. Ngige mentioned that motorcycle theft had become an organized syndicate extending beyond Kenya’s borders and required collective action from all stakeholders. Mogo has partnered with security agencies, boda boda associations, and local leaders to tackle the issue and safeguard customers’ assets.

Ngige also refuted allegations linking Mogo staff to motorcycle theft cases in Uasin Gishu County, stating that no investigations had confirmed such claims. She emphasized that Mogo is a reputable organization and does not condone criminal activities.

Nahashon Kemei, the chairperson of the Boda Boda Association in Uasin Gishu County, urged lenders to show leniency towards operators struggling with loan repayments due to harsh economic conditions. Kemei called for clarity on cases involving alleged motorcycle thefts, especially those reported after borrowers had cleared their loans. He stressed the need for stronger collaboration between lenders, operators, and security agencies to recover stolen motorcycles and build trust within the sector.

Kemei praised the strong working relationship between the county government and the police, which has significantly improved security and coordination among riders. Additionally, over 300 boda boda riders received free engine service for their motorcycles to enhance efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.
