Busia:As the morning sun rises over Busia town, the streets gradually fill with activity. Amidst the bustling scene of matatus and motorbikes, a group of men on bicycles navigate through the busy streets, waiting for passengers or slipping through narrow paths. These bicycle boda boda riders rely on their bicycles not only for transport but also as a crucial source of income, supporting their families and offering residents an affordable way to move around.
According to Kenya News Agency, the bicycle has remained a steadfast mode of transport in Busia, a town located along the Kenya-Uganda border, despite the increasing prevalence of motorbike boda bodas. For many riders like John Odongo, who has spent a decade in this business, the bicycle provides a reliable means to earn a living. Odongo’s day begins at 6 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m., during which he eagerly seeks out passengers.
Odongo, like many others, faces competition from motorbikes and matatus, yet he remains undeterred. He emphasizes the importance of perseverance and the opportunity to earn through hard work, encouraging young people in Busia to take advantage of available opportunities. However, the job demands patience and resilience, as it requires operating under challenging conditions, including poor road infrastructure and the physical toll of pedaling long hours.
Isaac Ojula, another bicycle rider, highlights the difficulties posed by rough roads, particularly in the interior parts of Busia, and calls for government intervention to improve road conditions. Such improvements could ease the burden on riders and enhance access for residents.
Despite these challenges, bicycle boda bodas continue to be appreciated for their affordability and the nostalgic connection they offer. Residents like Jane Achieng recall the days when bicycles dominated the streets, and she continues to prefer them for their cost-effectiveness and leisurely pace.
As Busia’s transport landscape evolves, the relevance of bicycle boda bodas is challenged by faster, motorized transport options. Yet, their affordability and unique role in connecting people to local needs secure their place in the community, ensuring that bicycles remain a vital part of Busia’s transportation system.
