Awendo: The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC)-Awendo Campus is set to expand its academic programmes and extend healthcare services to residents through mobile clinics. Speaking during the handover ceremony of a college bus funded by the Awendo National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF), KMTC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kelly Oluoch announced plans to enhance healthcare services in the area by expanding training programmes through mobile clinics.
According to Kenya News Agency, Oluoch stated that the new bus would enable the campus to address mobility challenges, facilitate practical training, and support the introduction of additional clinical and nursing courses. “The introduction of specialised clinical and nursing courses requires specific institutional facilities. We can only scale up these programmes if Awendo Level 3 Hospital is upgraded to a Level 4 facility, which is a mandatory regulatory requirement for offering such training,” Oluoch explained.
The CEO revealed that discussions are ongoing between Migori County Government and the national government to upgrade Awendo Level 3 Hospital to a Level 4 facility. This upgrade would pave the way for the introduction of additional training programmes at the campus, allowing the institution to meet the regulatory requirements necessary for specialised healthcare training while improving access to medical services for residents.
Awendo Member of Parliament (MP) Walter Owino emphasized the continued support from his office through the NG-CDF for the campus, which was established in Awendo in 2018. “Our investment in KMTC Awendo since 2018 has proven that strategic local funding changes lives. By expanding the programmes offered here and sponsoring needy students to the campus, we are not only enriching this main campus, but also laying the groundwork to open satellite institutions across Awendo,” Owino stated.
The legislator highlighted the critical role of the newly funded college bus in supporting practical training and facilitating the rollout of new academic programmes at the institution.
