Nairobi:Alupe University: Staff unions at Alupe University have joined a nationwide strike to demand the negotiation and implementation of the 2025-2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and to ensure salaries are paid through the Exchequer.
According to Kenya News Agency, the workers, represented by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), have expressed their intention to continue the strike until their demands are met. Nicholas Kirinya, KUSU Secretary for the Alupe branch, emphasized that the government must address their grievances, including the completion and implementation of the CBA and involvement in developing human resource policies.
Kirinya criticized the government for its lack of response and ineffective negotiations. He stated that previous discussions failed to achieve an agreement, and despite this, the government has not initiated further talks.
Dr. Peter Odhiambo, UASU Alupe University chapter secretary, highlighted that the CBA was expected to conclude in 2024 and take effect from July 2025. He expressed discontent with the government’s proposals regarding salary financing, particularly the suggestion of paying staff salaries from student fees, which he believes would disadvantage universities with fewer students.
Martha Ilugari, KUSU Alupe chapter Treasurer, warned that the ongoing strike could disrupt academic activities if unresolved. She pointed out that the commuter allowance provided under the CBA is insufficient given the current economic conditions.
KUSU Alupe chapter chairman Selestine Ramisi acknowledged the negative impact on students and parents but insisted on resolving the issues before resuming work. He opposed the funding model based on student fees, citing potential salary delays for institutions with limited enrollment.
