Nairobi:Kericho Abed Kiprotich, a high jumper from Chepkolon village in Kericho County, has transformed his humble beginnings into a promising athletic career. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches, the 22-year-old’s journey from makeshift training equipment to national recognition exemplifies determination and resourcefulness.
According to Kenya News Agency, Kiprotich began his high jump training at Kiptororgo Secondary School in Bureti Sub County. Despite limited resources, he regularly competed in school competitions, representing his school at national-level events. After completing secondary school in 2023, he improvised a training ground at home, using wooden poles, dry grass, and an old mattress.
Kiprotich shared videos of his training on social media, which gained attention and led to valuable advice and support from his growing audience. His breakthrough came when a journalist noticed his potential at an Athletics Kenya (AK) competition, further expanding his opportunities.
Between 2023 and 2024, Kiprotich competed in various AK track and field meetings, honing his skills and gaining experience. In June 2025, he secured sponsorship to train at the Complete Sports Training Center in Kaptagat, Uasin Gishu County, significantly advancing his training capabilities.
Guided by coach Gabriel Kiptanui, Kiprotich learned to balance intense training with adequate recovery. His efforts paid off when he won the men’s high jump at an AK meet in Thika in March 2025, clearing 1.99 meters. By October 2025, he joined the National Police Service, further solidifying his athletic career.
In June 2026, Kiprotich was crowned the National Police high jump champion at the National Athletics Championships in Nairobi, clearing 1.98 meters. His journey from a makeshift training setup to national success highlights the impact of perseverance and support.
Currently, Kiprotich is training to secure a spot on Kenya’s team for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, China, continuing his pursuit of international competition.
