A 15-Year-Old Girl Tragically Killed by Crocodile in Kibwezi

Nairobi: A 15-year-old girl tragically lost her life after being attacked by a crocodile while fetching water from Athi River in Kibwezi Sub County on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred at Ndalani Village in Kikumbulyu North Ward at around 6:30 p.m., as the Grade 10 student was drawing water from the crocodile-infested river.

According to Kenya News Agency, efforts to rescue the girl on Tuesday evening were unsuccessful. The crocodile dragged the victim into the deep waters, making it difficult for those present to offer any assistance. The County Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Warden, Gabriel Kiio, confirmed the incident, stating that the body has been retrieved from the river. However, he noted that police were prevented from taking the body to the mortuary at Makindu Sub County Hospital.

There are unconfirmed reports that irate local residents are expressing frustration over the slow response of KWS rangers to crocodile attacks, particularly in light of a recent incident at the same location where the girl was killed. The community members successfully retrieved the girl’s body from the river on Wednesday morning.
