Nairobi: Kiambu County has announced that 30 mothers who had faced challenges with Social Health Authority (SHA) payments were granted full waivers and discharged from Thika Level V Hospital on September 27.
According to Kenya News Agency, the County Government confirmed that the mothers encountered difficulties due to lack of SHA registration, unpaid fees, or missing valid identification documents. Despite the challenges, the hospital provided immediate care and addressed payment issues at a later stage.
County Executive Committee Member for Health Services Dr. Elias Maina stated that the decision to grant waivers demonstrated the administration’s commitment to ensuring no mother was denied essential healthcare. ‘At the time media coverage emerged, waivers were already being processed, and all mothers were granted full waivers on September 27, 2025, and safely discharged,’ Dr. Maina said.
The County further encouraged the public to register with SHA to ensure a seamless provision of health services in the future. Registration, officials said, would prevent delays and difficulties in accessing care, particularly for vulnerable groups such as expectant mothers.
The statement reaffirmed the County’s prioritization of maternal and child health, noting that financial or administrative challenges should not prevent mothers from accessing medical attention.
Dr. Maina added that the County was committed to strengthening collaboration with SHA to ensure residents continued to receive uninterrupted health services. ‘This demonstrates the County’s commitment to care,’ he said.
