23-Year-Old Arrested in Connection with Student’s Murder in Nakuru

Nakuru:Police are currently detaining a 23-year-old man linked to the murder of an 18-year-old student in Molo sub-county last month.

According to Kenya News Agency, the suspect, identified as Walter Kipkoech, had been evading capture since early September. Authorities tracked him down to a hideout in Lagwenda Village, Kuresoi North Sub-County.

Molo Sub-County Police Commander Justus Katana confirmed that Kipkoech was arrested by detectives from Molo, in collaboration with the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau at the Regional Criminal Investigations Headquarters in Nakuru. The arrest followed a detailed monitoring and tracking of his movements.

The victim, Joy Wangui, was a Form-Four student at Molo Secondary School. She was found dead in a house in the Kiambaa area of Moto Location on September 4, 2026. Preliminary investigations revealed that Wangui’s brother discovered her lifeless body after briefly leaving the house for a nearby shop.

Detectives recovered an axe, a panga, and two knives with suspected bloodstains from the scene. They also gathered additional evidence to ascertain the circumstances surrounding Wangui’s death. Initial investigations suggest a possible romantic involvement between Kipkoech and Wangui, with a suspected love triangle being explored as a potential motive.

A note believed to be written by the perpetrator was found at the scene, stating, “I love you, Joy, but never cheat; I am sorry.” Kipkoech was reportedly wearing clothes with apparent bloodstains at the time of his arrest.

Following his arrest, Kipkoech was taken to Molo Police Station for processing ahead of a court appearance. Investigators are continuing to piece together forensic evidence, witness statements, and other information to clarify the events leading to Wangui’s death.

Mr. Katana extended condolences to Wangui’s family and friends. The investigative agency affirmed its commitment to uncovering the truth behind the murder and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable. The DCI will persist in their efforts to complete the investigation.
