Evacuation of Ethiopians Underway in Sudan

Addis Ababa, Following the situation in Sudan, the government of Ethiopia is working to evacuate Ethiopians who are unable to leave the war zone for various reasons.

On Friday, November 03, 2023, the national task force that is coordinating this evacuation brought four busloads of returnees from Khartoum through Matema.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the national task force is providing the necessary support until the returnees reunite with their families.

Previously, more than 34,700 citizens have left the war zone and returned to Ethiopia.

Transport, Logistics and Defense Ministries Sign MoU to Enhance Maritime Sector

Addis Ababa, The Ministry of Transport and Logistics signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Defense to work together on the enhancement of the maritime sector.

Minister of Transport and Logistics Alemu Sime and Minister of Defense Abraham Belay signed the MoU today.

Establishing mechanisms for the exchange of maritime security information, strengthening regulatory institutional capacity, and developing a system that acknowledges the naval sea service and naval training institutions were stated as objectives of the agreement.

In addition, cooperation on research and development projects, including sharing experience on national maritime developments, and policies organizing partnership development activities, workshops, technical seminars, and conferences covering fields of common interest were also the other objectives mentioned.

Junior Golf Foundation Receives Balls From DP World

The Junior Golf Foundation Kenya (JGF) has received a batch of 24,000 golf balls from DP World, the smart logistics provider and title partner of the DP World Tour. The golf balls received are part of the DP World ‘second life’ container initiative that has been on a journey mission to collect used and unwanted golf balls to give back to grassroots golf and grow the game. Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ababu Namwamba said that this donation will help in transforming Kenya into one of the powerhouses of Sports in the world adding that it will play a part in the government’s implementation of the bottom-up policy which encompasses commercializing sports talents. ‘We currently have Michael Karanga ranked 83rd amateur in the world and such initiatives from our partners like the DP World and the European Tour will help us have more Karanga’s in Kenya and take the continent and the World by storm,’ said Namwamba. The CS said that he is happy to note that these are some of the things that they agreed on with the CEO of the PGA European Tour Keith Pelley sometime in mid-November last year in Dubai during the DP World Tour Championship. ‘I would like to pass my appreciation for support we have received as Kenya and we look forward to many more interactions and partnerships towards growing golf in the country,’ said Namwamba. The CS congratulated the four ladies who represented Kenya during the just concluded EACAAT championship in Kigali, Rwanda for finishing 2nd overall. He added that out of the four, two of them Namely Ashley Awuor and Bianca Ngecu are juniors who are already representing the country at that top level. ‘We are for sure on the right path and we encourage more partners like what NCBA Bank are doing with our juniors to onboard and see these over 180 juniors here today from as young as five years old fly the National flag high and even make a living out of it as professionals in the near future. Organization To Establish Avocado Processing Plant In Kakamega

Sisi Village Produce is set to establish an Avocado processing plant in Malava, Kakamega County for value addition of avocado fruits. The Processing plant will be established on a private Export Processing Zone (EPZ) facility that is under construction and owned by the organization. The EPZ will also be used as a sorting centre for avocado received from farmers to identify high quality avocados that meet the export market for export. Avocado fruits that will not meet the export market quality will be used at the processing plant to produce different avocado products including avocado oil. Speaking to KNA Sisi Village Produce Avocado Ambassador Elijah Karungani encouraged farmers to plant many avocados trees promising that the organization will support in farming and marketing of their fruits. He said as much as the organization is encouraging farmers to plant Hass Avocado varieties for export, the organization will also purchase other varieties from farmers at the EPZ. ‘We have encouraged farmers to plant as low as 10 seedlings. It is our prayers that farmers plant avocados in large numbers to enhance the chances of this sub county growing economically. We will be having the power to purchase and hence change the perception of this sub county,’ he noted. The Chairperson of Mumbo Avocado Farmers’ Cooperative Society Limited Maxwell Shamala said that the Hass Avocado variety has a wide market all over the world urging farmers willing to plant to obtain clean planting materials at the Sisi Village Produce. He said the processing plant will turn around the economy of Malava sub county since oil from avocado is needed across the world in the Pharmaceutical industries and in culinary recipes. Shamala added that the climate of Malava Sub County is conducive and supports the thriving of avocado trees promising farmers that avocado farming has high returns. The Chairman of Kakamega Fish Farmers Cooperative Society Dan Mwanzo who is also an Avocado farmer was delighted that some fish farmers from the county are also eager to plant avocados. He said it was important for farmers to diversify and venture into different types of farming enterprises in order to increase their incomes. According to the Horticultural Crops Directorate, Western Region produces Fuerte and Hass Avocados which are in demand in the export market. To support the crop, the Kakamega County government has invested Sh10 million for avocado promotion and assisting farmers to access clean planting materials.
