Embu: Embu County Commissioner Jack Obuo has urged residents to collect thousands of unclaimed National Identity Cards (IDs) at various collection points across the county. Approximately 13,000 ID cards remain at National Registration Bureau offices and the Huduma Center in Embu Town.
According to Kenya News Agency, efforts are being intensified to ensure the collection of these IDs by involving local administrators, including chiefs and their assistants, to spread the message at the grassroots level. The commissioner described the situation as a significant backlog and encouraged applicants to collect their IDs without further delay.
The Data Protection Act restricts the use of local administrators for ID delivery, placing the responsibility on the applicants to collect them in person. In Embu West Sub-county, nearly 2,000 IDs are uncollected. Registrar of Persons Philip Muthu stated that they receive about 500 processed IDs weekly, contributing to the backlog.
Huduma Center Manager Ruth Wachera reported that 306 first-time IDs, 1,200 duplicates, and 35 with changed particulars remain uncollected. She also highlighted a significant backlog of uncollected driving licenses and birth certificates, numbering 4,000 and 3,000, respectively.
