Young people have been challenged to enroll in Technical Training Institutes and pursue the highly marketable courses, especially in the growing construction industry.
Murang’a County Woman Representative Sabina Wanjiru notes the government has invested a lot in establishing technical colleges to offer more training opportunities.
Speaking during a graduation ceremony of scores of young people who trained on various short technical courses at Michuki Technical Training Institute, Wanjiru noted that the government has also set aside funds from which youth can apply for financing to support their training.
“Those who completed secondary education and did not join universities can enroll with technical courses. Demand for technicians in the country is still high and also one can employ himself,” she added.
She continued, “My office has partnered with an employment company dubbed Job Majuu, the company is currently seeking to get more than 10, 000 plumbers to be employed in Qatar, and so job opportunities for technicians are still there.”
The employment company, she observed, is genuine and does not require applicants to part with money so as to secure the opportunities saying only those who qualify will get the opportunities.
The Office of the County Woman Representative in partnership with Michuki Technical Institute has been sponsoring training of short technical courses since the year 2018.
So far, more than 3, 000 young people from Murang’a County have been trained while the local National Government Affirmative Action Fund provides them with equipment to establish income generating projects.
Wanjiru who was accompanied by Homa Bay Woman Representative, Gladys Wanga, underscored the need to empower young people saying due to increased unemployment rate, many youths have become hopeless.
“The unemployment rate in the country is quite high. Our young people are becoming hopeless, some indulging in drug abuse and this needs urgent ways to address unemployment in the country. Offering right training and funding the youth to establish incoming generating projects is what I am advocating for,” she added.
Her words were echoed by Wanga, who called for increased investment in manufacturing and agricultural sectors saying more investment will create job opportunities for those graduating from institutes of higher learning.
Wanga added that peace in the country can attract more investors and create a conducive environment for people to set up businesses.
“General Elections will be held this year but we should not allow elections to breach peace and unity in the country. Peace is paramount when it comes to the revival of the economy,” she added.
