Residents of Mweru village in Imenti South Sub-county of Meru County are calling on the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to take immediate action against an unknown wild animal that has been killing goats and sheep in the village.
The irate residents said the animal has been invading the area since December last year and has left a trail of losses all over the village.
Mr James Kiriinya, a resident, said that he lost his only two sheep in December last year to the strange animal and the issue has never been addressed by KWS despite reporting and filing claim forms as directed.
“When I lost two sheep in December last year, I made a report to the KWS offices and was required to fill claim forms which I did. There is nothing that came out of it; yesterday, I lost two goats, which has totally impoverished me,” said Mr Kiriinya.
Mr Andrew Mugendi told KNA that on Tuesday, the unknown animal appeared again and killed about ten goats in the village leaving owners at great loss.
He said the livestock have been their primary assets and added they have now been rendered poor following the unfortunate incident.
“We are calling on the KWS officers to come and trace the animal with the aim of taking it away to avoid more losses,” said Mr Mugendi.
Ms Irene Karimi said the re-appearance of the strange animal has now sent fear amongst parents whose children are required to go to school early in the morning.
“Our children go to school very early in the morning and we are afraid that they might be attacked by the wild animals along the way,” said Ms Karimi.
