Kisumu is staring at a biting water shortage following a drop in water levels at the main reservoir at Kibos Water Treatment Plant in Kajulu.
This is as a result of low water levels in River Kibos due to the drought being experienced in most parts of the country.
If the levels drop further, most parts of Kisumu city will have dry taps in the coming weeks.
Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company (KIWASCO) Managing Director Thomas Odongo in a statement to the media said the areas to be affected the most are Kanyamedha, Otonglo, Ting’re, Uzima, Mamboleo, Guba, Lolwe, Migosi, Kanyakwar, Manyatta, Nyamasaria and parts of Riat Hills.
Odongo said KIWASCO was set to issue a distribution schedule for the affected areas as efforts to ensure steady supply are intensified.
“We shall institute a distribution schedule if the situation persists and may also introduce a water supply programme using water bowsers,” he said.
The company, he added, has stepped up production from its main plant at Dunga which draws water from Lake Victoria to ensure that consumers don’t go without the essential commodity.
He urged area residents to store enough water and reduce wastages at the same time join conservation efforts to preserve natural resources.
