Ten vulnerable families from Ngiini Village of Mitaboni in Machakos County have received food donations from a community-based women’s self-help group to cushion them from the ongoing tough economic times.
The twenty-four members’ women’s group organized a charity to donate food and show compassion to orphans and widows in Ngiini village who have been struggling to put food on the table.
Speaking to the media on Friday, the chair of the self-help group Ms. Winfred Kyale said they were targeting more vulnerable families but due to financial challenges, crippled with increase in prices of commodities, they only managed to help 10 families.
“Our aim of forming this group is to help the orphans, widows, and vulnerable families where we give mattresses, utensils, food, seeds, and manure for them to engage in farming,” said Ms. Kyale.
She called on residents and other well-wishers to come together and offer any help to the less fortunate in the community.
“We urge any good Samaritan to help us support the vulnerable in our midst in any way possible. Our group is registered and we have a certificate so what we are doing is genuine and legal,” Ms. Kyale.
On her part, the area Assistant Chief Ms. Leah Ngutu, hailed the efforts of the women group and also urged well-wishers to come up and offer more support.
“I am happy today to see the unity in our community and the compassion for the less fortunate. We appeal to well-wishers to offer their support to uplift these people,” said Ngutu.
The Chief further warned the vulnerable people who have been given food, not to sell the items saying they will face the wrath of the law.
“Those who receive this food to go and sell it will be breaking the law and we will deal with them accordingly,” said Ngutu.
Makau Musyoka a class seven pupil who lost his mother last year after she was swept away by floods, thanked the women group for the donation and promised to ensure the food is well utilized.
“We lost our mother and I was left looking after my little brother. We are grateful for the food we have been given and shall use it well,” said Musyoka.
