Vihiga Maintains Continued Environmental Conservation Efforts

Vihiga: Vihiga County Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo led the county Friday in marking World Environment Day at Kaimosi Friends University, Tiriki East sub county. Speaking at the forum, Dr. Ottichillo highlighted some of the county’s successes in environmental conservation and the measures set in place to ensure continuity.

According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Ottichilo emphasized the county’s efforts in restoring degraded landscapes, citing re-afforestation of indigenous community forests and their fencing, particularly in Tiriki East and Hamisi sub counties. He mentioned the restoration of Maragoli hills into its natural ecosystem as a significant conservation achievement, especially since it is a major water catchment area. This restoration has been achieved through collaboration with partners like Kaimosi Friends University.

Dr. Ottichilo further stated that the county has worked to conserve the remnant tropical forests found in Kaimosi and Kibiri. He highlighted the degradation of wetland areas due to eucalyptus tree planting and announced a tree program to systematically remove eucalyptus trees and replace them with bamboos. Plans to build a bamboo industry in the county are underway, with investors expressing interest once the bamboo trees reach commercial production scale.

The governor revealed the formulation of a policy, pending approval by the county executive, to clear eucalyptus trees from wetlands. He urged residents to replace them with bamboo trees. On climate change, he noted Vihiga County’s leadership role, mentioning his involvement in the Roman Catholic Pope’s committee on climate change following his visit to the Vatican.

Dr. Ottichilo also discussed the county’s recognition by a Senate committee for setting standards through the FLLoCA program. He expressed support for the newly launched CECARE strategic plan at Kaimosi Friends University and highlighted the county’s adoption of an agroecology policy. The county is moving towards smart agriculture and a circular economy to ensure proper waste management and environmental conservation.
