Geneva – The acting United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Al-Nashif has hailed the general elections in Angola stating that the process was peaceful and inclusive, and MPLA won with 51.17 percent of the votes.
The UNHCHR official said so when addressing the world situation on human rights at 51st Session of the Human Rights Council, held at the United Nations Palace in Geneva on Monday.
On 24 August, Angola held its fifth elections, after those held in 1992, 2008, 2012 and 2017.
Nine political parties participated in general elections – MPLA, UNITA, PRS, FNLA, APN, PHA and P-NJANGO parties and the CASA-CE coalition.
The final results of the National Electoral Commission (CNE), validated by the Constitutional Court, gave the MPLA victory with 51.17 percent of the votes, electing 124 MPs to the National Assembly, a body comprising 220 seats.
Nada Al-Nashi also referred to the recently ended electoral process in Kenya, whose the situation forced the deployment of a rapid intervention team to boost the UN’s preventive commitment.
