Turkana: The Directorate of Tourism, in partnership with the State Department for Tourism and Wildlife, convened a joint meeting to strategize the identification, documentation, and mapping of unique tourism products through a standardized digital database. The meeting aimed to establish a unified methodology for geo-mapping and profiling key sites, positioning Turkana as a competitive frontier destination.
According to Kenya News Agency, the consultative meeting gathered technical officers and sector experts to develop a robust strategy for Turkana’s tourism landscape. Abdul Lomuria, the Director for Tourism, expressed the county’s full support for the project, highlighting it as a significant step in unlocking Turkana’s rich heritage. He pointed to the discovery of the Turkana Boy at Nariokotome as a vital element of the region’s heritage tourism potential.
Elly Ekwee, team lead for the State Department for Tourism and Wildlife, stressed the importance of sustained collaboration to ensure the comprehensive documentation of all tourism products in Turkana. Timeline Solution consultant David Uz added that the new framework would streamline data collection and verification, enhancing accuracy and creating a reliable digital platform for planning and promotion. This initiative, he noted, would support informed decision-making for both public and private stakeholders.
The meeting concluded with the decision to establish coordinated implementation teams to elevate Turkana’s tourism profile on a global stage. Attendees included officers from the State Department for Tourism and Wildlife, such as Robert Cheruiyot and Elizabeth Gitonga, alongside other officers from the Directorate of Tourism.
