Turkana County, is the second largest county in Kenya which boasts the biggest desert lake in the country also the world’s largest permanent desert lake – Lake Turkana . However, Turkana is one of Kenya’s poorest regions where hundreds of thousands are facing severe starvation.
Despite exporting fish to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Turkana county is grappling with rapid rise of Global Acute Malnutrition rates of 34.8% due to lack of rainfall for four consecurive seasons.
To address the gaps in the Food Systems and the deteriorating Food and Nutrition situation in the County, the National government, the Turkana County government and development partners are working on the County Agri-Nutrition Implementation Strategy (CANIS) with support from Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO).
