Trans Nzoia Trains Grievance Redress Committee For Development Projects

Trans nzoia: The County Government of Trans Nzoia has under the Kenya Devolution Support Programme II (KDSPII) trained its Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM) committee to assist in fast trucking development in the region. The two-day workshop, funded by the World Bank and the County Government through the State Department of Devolution, equipped officials with skills to handle public complaints during project implementation.

According to Kenya News Agency, the session was opened by the KDSPII KRA2 Focal Person, Pheobi Buchunju, who stated that the training was timely as the county awaits funding for key projects. The projects to be implemented include upgrading Milimani Estate Road to bitumen standard, renovating the Kitale Museum, and improving services at Tulwet Health Centre. Buchunju emphasized the importance of the mechanism in ensuring that residents’ lives and daily activities are not disrupted during development.

Jonathan Bului of the National Coordination and Project Implementation Unit (NCPIU), State Department for Devolution, praised the county for establishing the committee. He guided participants through social risk management and the legal framework for grievances, highlighting the need for continuous effort throughout the project lifecycle. Bului pointed out gaps in social risk management as barriers to effective grievance handling and advocated for a multi-sectoral approach.

Enock Nyaroo, County GRM Focal Person, presented the draft framework and acknowledged the support from KDSPII in establishing the committee. He expressed confidence that the framework would enhance complaint resolution and ensure projects progress smoothly. Participants noted the fragmented nature of grievance handling in many counties and advocated for a unified county-wide GRM system.

County officials recognized the importance of addressing challenges as a step towards strengthening grievance redress, ensuring that projects benefit communities without causing harm.
