Tindiret: Residents of Tindiret Ward are optimistic about the new opportunities set to arise from the opening of the Kibugat Open-Air Market, which will now operate every Thursday. The market, though still in its early stages and without essential amenities such as sanitation facilities, water points, and permanent trading sheds, is already being viewed as a significant milestone in boosting local trade and agricultural development.
According to Kenya News Agency, during the official launch on Thursday, County Chief Officer for Trade and Enterprise Development Caroline Lagat praised the initiative, describing it as a vital step toward empowering local communities and improving rural livelihoods. She noted that the market will provide a reliable and accessible platform for farmers, traders, and small business owners to sell their goods and interact with buyers from across the region.
Lagat acknowledged the current lack of basic infrastructure but assured residents that the county government is fully committe
d to addressing this challenge. She explained that plans are underway to construct key amenities, including proper sanitation facilities, modern stalls, and waste disposal systems. The amenities, she added, would ensure that the market operates efficiently and in a clean environment, adding that the county is keen on promoting structured and sustainable markets that can attract more traders and customers while enhancing revenue collection.
Area Member of County Assembly (MCA) Paul Birech echoed her sentiments, saying the market’s opening marks a major step toward economic self-reliance for Tindiret residents. He pledged to work closely with the county government to ensure that adequate funds are allocated in the upcoming budget to develop the market’s infrastructure. Birech emphasized that improving market conditions will not only benefit local farmers but also stimulate broader economic activity across Nandi County by creating linkages between rural producers and urban consumers.
Area residents and traders
expressed their excitement at the prospect of having a nearby marketplace, noting that they will no longer have to travel long distances to sell their farm produce. They believe the new market will make it easier to access customers, improve household incomes, and encourage youth involvement in agribusiness. Once fully developed, the Kibugat open-air market is expected to become a vibrant center of trade and social interaction and foster economic growth.
