Rebecca Tonkei of UDA, is the new Women Representative of Narok County after she garnered 133,686 votes against her close competitor Jane Nampaso of Jubilee party who got 97,181 votes.
Daughter of the former cabinet minister William Ntimama Ms. Lydia Ntimama who was vying on an ODM ticket managed 48, 191 votes while Risper Chepkoech and Emily Kori, both independent candidates got 25,491 and 16,222 respectively.
The results were announced by Narok County Elections Manager Dr. Sidney Namulundu at the Maasai Mara University County tallying center.
Ms. Ntimama conceded defeat saying the race was friendly and fair, asking the winner Ms. Tonkei to look at the affairs of women and the less fortunate in the society.
She also congratulated Ms. Agnes Pareyio, the MP-elect for Narok North Constituency for being the first woman to be elected as an MP in the county.
“When women lead, everybody in the society benefits. We are happy that we have started seeing changes in our county,” she said, congratulating the many women who have been elected in different counties.
On her part, Ms. Tonkei thanked the Narok people for putting confidence in her, promising to put her efforts in elevating poverty among the residents of the county.
“I come to bring hope and change. I want to represent the people of this great county well so that we can raise our standards of livelihood,” she said during an interview after receiving her certificate.
Ms. Tonkei replaces Ms. Soipan Tuya who did not defend her seat.
