Three Elephants Killed In Rombo

Three elephants were killed on Saturday in Rombo after attacking a woman, killing her two-year-old child.

Furious residents, armed with arrows, hunted down the elephants and managed to kill two of them.

Another rogue elephant was killed by Kenya Wildlife Service officers after it became wild and charged at local residents.

According to Chief Olgirra Location, John Logela, Nempuris Nkaitol, 24 years old, from Nyaru village, was carrying her two-year-old baby boy on her back and had gone to Nyaru Shopping Centre to buy foodstuffs for supper.

On her way home at around 7.30 pm, she was chased by a rogue lone elephant who trampled on her and the child, killing the boy on the spot by bursting the head, while the mother sustained serious injuries on the left thigh.

The mother was rescued by villagers after the elephant escaped into darkness.

She was rushed to Rombo Mission Hospital, where upon assessment she was referred to Loitokitok Sub-County Hospital, where she was admitted in serious condition, later transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she is receiving treatment.

Loitoktok Sub-county Police Commander, Shadrack Rutto, expressed concern that in the recent past there has been an upsurge in human-wildlife conflicts in the Sub-county.

He cited the case in Rombo and also that at Kimana Sanctuary, where there was an invasion of farms by rogue elephants who destroyed crops.

The security team has organised a meeting with the local community in Rombo to address the issue.
