Preparations are in full swing ahead of the Inaugural Nairobi Festival planned by the County Government to celebrate the vibe of the city.
The one-week festival is set to take place from 12th to 17th December at the newly refurbished Uhuru Park.
Speaking at a presser in Uhuru Park on Friday, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja stated that the festival is a unique chance for Nairobians to celebrate youth innovation, ICT and the arts.
“We are the silicone savannah of this region and so from the 12th to the 17th of every year, we will come together and celebrate our talents ranging from fashion, film and even food,” said Sakaja.
The Governor noted that local artists young and old will be featured in the festival which will also include ‘the unique culture of our matatus.’
“We will showcase our matatu culture with various stakeholders across the board and the public will have an opportunity to vote for the most creative Mathree and transport SACCO,” said Sakaja.
The Governor disclosed that there will be a lot of traders who will be showcasing their wares and selling their products which will make the festival an opportunity to do wholesome shopping from a variety of Nairobi’s businesses.
“Safety is very key for us and we have recently beefed-up security across the city and some of the incidents earlier reported have decreased,” he said.
“Considering the numbers we are expecting during the festival, we are working together with all security agencies to ensure safe environment for all,” he added.
The Governor reiterated that the Sh100 for adults and Sh50 for children charged through the Nairobi Pay platform *647#, will go to support the vulnerable in our society through children’s homes and old age homes as part of the County Christmas Donation.
“There has been a lot of interest and support from the private sector, non-governmental organizations and different government agencies in making this a success, I wish to thank them all for believing in the creative economy,” said Sakaja.
At the same time, member of the County Executive Committee (CEC) for Inclusivity, Public Participation and Customer Service Susan Silantoi stated that the festival is a positive way to close 2022 on a high.
“I cannot wait to see every one of you from the 12th to celebrate and promote the County’s creative arts,” said Silantoi.
