Tessie Musalia Calls For Concerted Efforts To Improve Street Children’s Welfare

Mombasa: The spouse of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, Tessie Musalia, has called for stronger collaboration between the government, civil society, and the private sector to support vulnerable children across the country.

According to Kenya News Agency, Mrs. Musalia joined hundreds of participants from different walks of life in Mombasa during the annual Wemathon held at the Butterfly Pavilion Forest Trail. The event, organized by the Wema Centre, aims to support healthcare for street-connected children. Funds raised from activities such as running, walking, cycling, and Zumba dance competitions will be directed towards establishing a clinic at the center to provide medical services for street children.

Mrs. Musalia highlighted that children’s rights in Kenya are protected by the Constitution and various legislations, specifically citing Article 53 of the Bill of Rights, which guarantees every child fundamental rights and freedoms to safeguard their dignity and future. She noted that the government has taken significant steps to strengthen child protection systems through the publication of the Public Finance Management Fund Child Welfare Regulations, which aim to establish the Children Welfare Fund.

Mrs. Musalia expressed her encouragement by institutions like the Wema Centre, which are committed to rescuing, rehabilitating, educating, and reintegrating children back into society. She praised the center’s efforts, emphasizing that they extend beyond service delivery to restoring dignity, hope, love, and opportunities for children who deserve a chance to dream and thrive.

She reminded attendees that protecting children is a collective responsibility shared by families, communities, and institutions, not just the government. On Friday, Mrs. Musalia’s Ushiriki Wema organization, in partnership with the government, Equity Afya, and the Wema Centre, facilitated access to various Huduma Centre and healthcare services for children from the center and surrounding communities.

Mrs. Musalia emphasized that no single organization can meet the needs of children alone. She stated that when organizations come together, they can reach further, serve better, and restore dignity where it is needed most. She described true partnership as the collaboration of government, the private sector, and civil society, working together not just in principle but in action, to improve the well-being of citizens, especially children.

She further underscored that partnerships are essential for growth, innovation, and sustainability, enabling organizations to achieve more collectively than they would working alone.
