Diana Chepkemoi, who has hit headlines after reports of being brutalised by her Saudi Arabian boss, is expected in the country today.
This is according to her mother Clara Cherotich Maritim, who told KNA at her Cheptalal home in Konoin Sub County, Bomet County that she had received a word from Labour Cabinet Secretary Simon Kiprono Chelugui on Saturday.
Maritim said, so far she had scanty information on the same though she had assurance from the CS that her daughter was on her way home after having been hospitalised and confirmed to be in good health.
She said she directly spoke with her daughter three months ago when she told her that her Saudi boss had confiscated her mobile phone and documents and that since then she has heard no word from her.
She said Diana, who is a student at Meru University, opted out of college to look for greener pastures in Saudi Arabia owing to her incapability to raise school fees for her and two other siblings who were university students as well.
“Diana saw how much I struggled to raise school fees and she opted to hustle abroad so that she would continue with her education. That was one year three months ago,” she said.
“As a family, we do not have full information but CS Chelugui assured us that she would touch down today. We hope to reunite with her and that will be our happiness,” she said.
Fredrick Odhiambo of Haki Africa said he was perturbed by the gravity of the situation of domestic workers who were flown abroad in the guise of lucrative jobs.
Odhiambo said he stood in solidarity with Diana’s family and that there ought not to be any Kenyan whose life is jeopardised as they sought to make ends meet in foreign countries.
He said there were 51 other Kenyans who were stuck in Saudi Arabia under inhuman conditions.
He pointed fingers on local agents who lure the jobless Kenyans saying the Government must conduct a thorough audit on them to rid the sector of rogue individuals.
