Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Dr. Fred Matiang’i has issued 26,588 Title deeds to the residents of Makueni County as part of government efforts to settle historical land issues in the country.
The title deeds will benefit more than 37,000 households including Mbooni (11,121), Kilungu (10,365), Makueni (3,963) and Kibwezi (1,139) respectively.
Dr. Matiang’i made the announcement Thursday at Kikima Mixed Secondary School in Mbooni West Sub County, where he issued title deeds to beneficiaries in the area.
At the same time, the CS cautioned residents against selling their land as this would impoverish their families, but instead encouraged them to utilize the land in farming in order to fend for themselves.
“Don’t be deceived into selling your land without considering your family because in the long run they stand to suffer,” said Matiang’i.
At the same time, he cautioned Deputy County Commissioners and chiefs against authorizing selling of land without the approval of family members in a bid to curb family feuds resulting from haphazard disposal of land in the county.
“You chiefs and deputy county commissioners make sure anybody who wishes to sell land follows the right procedure. You must ensure that the family is involved before approving the land sale,” he emphasized.
On his part, Makueni Governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana lauded the national government for the issuances of the title deeds, adding that his government had spent Sh50 million to do surveys, which culminated in the issuance of the title deeds in the county.
At the same time, the governor disclosed that land adjudication was nearing completion in Nguu Masumba, which will culminate in issuance of title deeds to the area residents.
On his part, Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior urged the beneficiaries to use the title deeds to acquire loans in order to educate their children and also fend for themselves.
