Nairobi: The State Department for Irrigation held a one-day sensitisation meeting for interns deployed to it by the Public Service Commission. The induction aimed at equipping the interns with essential knowledge of public service operations and enhancing their service delivery outputs.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Director of Administration, Gibson Kamau Muhuhu, who represented the Principal Secretary, CPA Ephantus Kimotho, opened the induction meeting and wished the interns a productive and enriching experience at the State Department. The training is designed to build the interns’ capacity in critical areas such as Public Finance Management, organisational structure, Public Service Code of Conduct and Ethics, workplace safety, mental health, Performance Contracting, and drugs and substance abuse. This training aims to enable the interns to effectively contribute to the implementation of the state department’s mandate.
The interns interacted freely with various heads of directorates and units, who guided them through essential areas, emphasizing the importance of professionalism, workplace ethics, and a keen understanding of government systems. Presentations covered Kenya’s budgeting processes, the state department’s strategic priorities, key irrigation projects, the National Irrigation Sector Investment Plan (NISIP), and the professional code of conduct.
The sessions were crafted to enhance the interns’ understanding of public service operations and foster a culture of accountability and excellence during their one-year internship. The interns were encouraged to engage actively in ongoing projects and work towards achieving their annual performance targets while upholding qualities such as punctuality, commitment, creativity, honesty, professionalism, discipline, and proactivity.
These qualities are considered essential for unlocking the interns’ potential and supporting the State Department of Irrigation’s mission to increase the area under irrigated agriculture, thereby boosting the country’s food security as part of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) through the delivery of quality public services to citizens.
